De globalisering en het neoliberalisme hebben ideeën en cultuur herleid tot een format waarmee geld te verdienen valt. Kwaliteit wordt gemeten aan het succes op de markt. De mediabusiness duwt naar een sterkere symbiose tussen diverse types van communicatie. Er worden grote conglomeraten in de vrijetijdsindustrie uitgebouwd, gericht op ontspanning en vermaak. Men wordt multimiljonair door, zoals de Britneys van deze wereld, het uitgekiende cultiveren van het imago van the girl next door. Dat leidt tot het blasé van de anti-elitaire elite of van de 'omnivoren', die gebrek aan diepgang geen probleem vinden. Het politieke luik van deze ontwikkeling is het populisme. De partijen worden vandaag gedirigeerd, soms zelfs open en bloot, door reclamejongens, media-adviseurs en spin doctors. Nieuws en actualiteit worden vernauwd tot de ditjes en datjes uit het banale maar daardoor herkenbare leven van alledag. Nieuws vertaalt zich in kijkcijfers, media-aandacht vertaalt zich in symbolisch kapitaal. Kritische afstand, gelaagdheid of tegenspraak hebben hier geen plaats. Er ontstaat een eenheidsworst, een pensée unique die wordt gedragen door het PMCC, het Politiek-Mediatiek-Commercieel-Complex.
